My Experience on the Portuguese Way

The Portuguese Way offers a wide range of experiences. The route follows old paths and country roads through small villages, vineyards, and rolling hills. Walking is not only a physical challenge, but also a transformative experience that allows us to connect with nature, reflect on what we see, and, above all, find inner peace. It is a route full of beauty, spirituality, and friendship among the pilgrims.

Leaving Portugal behind

In our last stage in Portugal, I felt nostalgic. The emotions were so intense that I wished this wonderful experience would never end.

At the end of the afternoon, we arrive at Valença, a small town on the border with Spain, on a hill above the Minho River. The city is famous for its fortifications dating from the 17th century, being one of the largest and best preserved in Europe. It was a strategic place that protected the city during the wars against Spain.

The historic center of Valença is a lovely place to explore. Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with traditional houses and buildings adorned with colorful facades. The city has a medieval atmosphere, where many shops sell traditional crafts, especially hand embroidery.

The beautiful Medieval city of Tui

The Minho River separates Portugal and Spain. There is a large bridge over the river with amazing views of both Countries. After crossing it, we arrive at Tui in the Spanish province of Galicia. It was founded in the 1st century BC.

Then we walked to the historic district on a very steep hill where the walls, the cathedral, and the houses were stacked one on top of the other. I had the feeling that they were hanging in the air.

After a delicious dinner of tapas and sangria, we rested in a beautiful bed and breakfast in the historic district.

How much history is locked in one place!
