A Magical Journey to the Highest Andean Peaks in Colombia

When I discovered the paramos, my perception of nature changed forever. These ecosystems, which, by the whims of geography, we have in tropical America, are unique worldwide.

What is a paramo?

The paramo is a unique ecosystem found at altitudes of over three thousand meters above sea level along the Andes Mountain range and in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. While some paramos are found from northern Peru to Costa Rica, they thrive in Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. Colombia, with thirty-seven paramos, has over half of these ecosystems.

Where are the paramos located?

They are small islands scattered on the highest peaks, where the beautiful cloud forest ends but before the treeless zone and the glaciers. Our mountains refuse to shed their vegetation and create the most colorful and unexpected gardens, home to many endemic species, including the emblematic frailejones or espeletias.

Why are the paramos special to me?

Life has bestowed wonderful gifts upon me; I have received some throughout my life, and I am only discovering others. The ability to be amazed and to share what I see and feel has been a driving force that has compelled me to uncover a part of myself I didn’t know existed.

Today, I want to share the first part of the Magical World of the Paramos. Thirty-two minutes of a magical world. Get ready to experience it:
